CHINESE Language Enrollment Policies

All NEW language students, regardless of their backgrounds, MUST take the Chinese placement test if they meet either of the following two categories:
(1) plan to take any Chinese language classes at UCLA regardless of their language background
(2) need to fulfill the foreign language requirement (for one or two years) at UCLA.

Elementary Level Placement Test
Beginning students and those who can speak some Mandarin and can read and write some characters must take the Elementary Level Placement Test (a 60-minute written examination followed by a 5-minute interview). Students who pass the Elementary Level Placement Test will have fulfilled the one-year foreign language requirement. Those who do not pass are placed in Chinese 1, 1A, 2, 2A, 3, or 3A, according to their scores.

Intermediate Level Placement Test
Students who did not take elementary Chinese courses (1/1A thru 3/3A) at UCLA but wish to enroll in intermediate Chinese (4/4A thru 6/6A) should take the Intermediate Level Test (a 60-minute written examination followed by a 5-minute interview). Students who pass the Intermediate Level Test will have fulfilled two years of the foreign language requirement. Those who do not pass are placed in Chinese 4, 4A, 5, 5A, 5C, 6, 6A, or 6C, according to their scores.

Placement Exam Schedule
The Elementary Level and Intermediate Placement Exams will be held during week 0 of Fall quarter and week 1 of Winter quarter.  Time and place will be posted on the ALC website about a month prior to the exam.  There are no make-up exams.  Students who miss the exam will have to wait until the next quarter offered.

All students must sign up for the placement exam in advance.  Sign-up will begin about one month prior to the exam.  Official online signups for the examination will be available after the exam schedule has been announced.

Fall 2008 Placement Exam Schedule is available at: http://www.alc.ucla.edu/data/examtimes.html

The placement test scores are valid for only one academic year (3 quarters).  If you wish to enroll in a Chinese language course after your scores have expired, you will need to take another placement exam.

Chinese Language courses
Chinese language courses are sequential and are offered only once a year.  For example: Chinese 1 is offered only in Fall quarter, Chinese 2 is offered only in Winter quarter, etc.

Enrollment Information for Chinese 1 and 1A
Students who intend to enroll in Chinese 1 or 1A must follow these steps: (1) sign up for 1 or 1A thru URSA (all students who sign up will be placed on the waitlist) and (2) take the Elementary Placement Test.

Students who took the most recent Winter Quarter placement test and placed into 1 or 1A should sign up for the class and e-mail alcgen@humnet.ucla.edu to be moved from the waitlist into the class. Please include your NAME and SID in the e-mail.

After the fall placement test results are available, the department will enroll waitlisted students who placed into Chinese 1 or 1A. Students who sign up for Chinese 1 or 1A but do not place into those courses will be dropped from the waitlist. Students who were placed in 1 or 1A but have not signed up for the waitlist should show up on the first day of instruction (enrollment priority is given to students who have followed the procedure above). Enrollment slots will only be offered on the first day of instruction if there are spaces available.

Enrollment Information for all other Chinese language courses
Students who place into other Chinese language courses should contact the instructor directly for a PTE number (space permitting). Please note the quarter the course is being offered.
