SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST ASIAN (Hindi-Urdu, Indonesian, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese) Language Enrollment Policies
UCLA students should take a South or Southeast Asian placement exam if they meet either of the following two categories:
(1) have background in one of the above languages and want to enroll in the specific language course
(2) need to fulfill the foreign language requirement (for one or two years) at UCLA.
If you have NO background, you may enroll in Hindi 1, Indonesian 1, Filipino 1, Thai 1 or Vietnamese 1 without taking the placement exam.
South and Southeast Asian Placement Exam
There are no official sign-ups for the test; just show up at the correct time and place with your UCLA I.D.
The Placement Exams for South and Southeast Asian Languages are offered only during the Fall quarter. The exam will be held at the beginning of fall quarter. Time and place will be announced about a month prior to the exam on our website.
There are no make-up exams. Students who miss the exam will have to wait until the next academic year.
ALC only offer placement exams for languages offered by the department. ALC does NOT certify for Punjabi or any other Southeast Asian languages except Hindi-Urdu, Thai, Filipino/Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Bahasa Indonesian. ALC does not certify non-UCLA students for any language.
Fall 2008 Placement Exam Schedule is available at: http://www.alc.ucla.edu/data/examtimes.html
Enrollment in a South or Southeast Asian language course
Students should take the placement exam if they plan on enrolling in a South or Southeast Asian language in any academic quarter. We discourage students joining our courses after the Fall quarter but students may contact the instructors to enroll in Winter/Spring quarters to satisfy their foreign language requirement.
Once you are placed into a course, please wait until the quarter when the course is offered to contact the instructor of the course. To enroll in a course, please send an e-mail to the instructor with your name, SID, exam date, and results for a PTE number.
The placement test scores are valid for only one academic year (3 quarters). If you wish to enroll in a South or Southeast Asian language course after your scores have expired, you will need to take another placement exam.
Non-UCLA students may take our courses through Intercampus exchange of UC students or through UCLA Extension; we do not certify or give waivers to other UC students.
See the Language Waiver and Placement Exam Policy webpage: http://www.alc.ucla.edu/data/waiver.html.
