The Department of Asian Languages & Cultures is delighted to congratulate Professor David Schaberg, Dean of the Humanities at UCLA, on being awarded the 2018 Patrick D. Hanan Book Prize for Translation (China and Inner Asia) by the Association of Asian Studies (AAS) for his collaborative translation project Zuo Tradition/Zuozhuan: Commentary on the “Spring and Autumn Annals”.
The Zuo Tradition translation project spanned many years and was the result of a collaboration between Professor Schaberg (UCLA), Professor Stephen Durrant (University of Oregon), and Wai-Yee Li (Harvard University). Published in 2016, the 2243 page two volume translation is the longest and among the most challenging texts from pre-modern China. This new translation of the Zuo Tradition is the most complete edition ever published in English, including the original text, a scholarly introduction, and extensive annotations.
Professor Schaberg previously received the prestigious Joseph Levenson Prize by AAS for his earlier monograph A Patterned Past: Form and Thought in Early Chinese Historiography (Harvard East Asian Monograghs, 2002) in 2003.
