Jiayu Gui is a Ph.D. student in Modern Japanese Literary and Cultural Studies. Jiayu holds a B.A. in Japanese Language and Literature from Beijing Normal University (2022) and an M.A. in Regional Studies-East Asia from Harvard University (2024). She is also the inaugural Indra Levy Scholar for her study at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies (IUC) in Yokohama in 2024. Her research investigates the intersection of gender, wartime politics, and literary production in imperial Japan, both on the mainland and in its colonies. She is particularly interested in the notion of mentorship, its problematics and intricacies as they unfold across various media, as well as the tensions and dynamics between professional and amateur writing. Her broader interests include theatrical and literary modernity, magazine studies, and the financial aspects that shape the lives of intellectuals in modern Japan.
