Xianda Huang is a Ph.D. student in Chinese Language and Culture at UCLA. His current research examines the social and cultural transformations of 1980s China, focusing on how the Party-state’s cultural apparatus and media infrastructures—alongside intellectuals, film actors, and popular musicians—shaped the cultural landscape of the Reform and Opening era. More broadly, his work explores the relationship between politics and culture in the PRC transnationally, with particular interest in China’s cultural exchanges with Japan.

He received his B.A. in Economics and Chinese Literature from Vanderbilt University and his M.A. in East Asian Studies from Yale University. He was a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University, supported by the Yale Fox International Fellowship.
