Arisa Aoki is a master’s student in traditional Japanese theatre at Waseda University, from which she also received her BA in 2014. Her interests include Kabuki matsubame-mono (plays adapted from Noh and Kyogen) and the reception of folk stories in jōruri (traditional narrative music) and ukiyo-zōshi (“tales of the floating world”). She is currently studying the Kabuki of chidaruma-mono (“bloodstained Bodhidharma plays”), focusing on the changes of the main characters’ sexual orientation in the Edo and Meiji periods. She has presented her research at the Japanese Society for the History of Performing Arts and the Asian Studies Conference Japan.
