Welcome Message from the Director of Graduate Studies

Director of Graduate Studies, Professor Hongyin Tao
Dear Prospective Graduate Students,

Welcome to the Asian Languages and Cultures Department. We are located in one of the nation’s largest communities of Asian Americans in a major gateway to Asia, with exciting multidisciplinary programs covering the broad regions of East, South, and Southeast Asia. The specializations of our award-winning faculty span a vast spectrum of fields: Buddhism & Korean Christianity, film studies, history & archeology, linguistics, literature, popular culture, and their many integrated interfaces, ensuring wide exposure to important issues in Asia while providing in-depth studies on particular topics. Please feel free to browse the links on this page for more information about our graduate program.

To our new and continuing students,  an important part of ALC’s mission is to provide a world-class graduate education that will prepare you for a successful and fulfilling career built on your knowledge of Asian languages and cultures. We value your partnership in research, teaching, and service while a graduate student at UCLA. As Director of Graduate Studies, I work with faculty and staff to help you navigate the challenging program requirements and ensure your access to training, resources, and opportunities that will facilitate your steady progress to the degree and  successful career placement beyond ALC. Please feel free to drop me an email should you have any questions or need any help.
