Welcome Message from the Director of Graduate Studies
Dear Current and Future Graduate Students,
Welcome to UCLA’s Department of Asian Languages and Cultures. Located as we are in a city that serves as a major gateway to Asia and has its own rich history of Asian culture, we offer exciting interdisciplinary programs covering East, South, and Southeast Asia. Our graduate programs span a wide variety of fields including literature, history, religion, film and media studies, archeology, theater and performance, and languages and linguistics with a focus on critical methodology, comparative study, and engagement with diverse theoretical approaches. We hope you will take a moment to browse our website and learn about our faculty members and our graduate programs.
To our new and continuing students, a core element of ALC’s mission is to offer its graduate students a world-class education, giving you the training and preparation you need to embark on a successful career in the field of Asian languages and cultures. Students participate in a variety of courses, colloquia, seminars, and intellectual and cultural programming designed to give them historical breadth, a critical mindset, and the ability to read and analyze texts in Asian languages. We look forward to working closely with you as you develop your own innovative research. As Director of Graduate Studies, I collaborate with faculty and staff to help you navigate the challenging but fulfilling journey toward the completion of your degree, as you acquire the knowledge and the know-how you need to become a specialist and future leader of your field. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me should you have any questions or need help.
