Makiko Tsuneda is a doctoral student at Waseda University. Her research focuses on the overseas reception of The Tale of Genji, especially in France. She is particularly interested in the role of translation in processes of reception. Her recent work has focused on questions of gender, including how gender informs Arvède Barine’s 19th century partial translation of the text. This interest has also led her to reconsider the place of gender in medieval commentaries, including those authored by Hanaya Gyokuei, a noblewoman and commentator of the Genji.
