Richard E. Strassberg earned his Ph.D. in East Asian Studies from Princeton University.  He is a professor of Chinese and specializes in pre-modern Chinese literature and culture.  Among the courses he teaches are: classical Chinese language, fiction, and prose; pre-modern narrative and drama; mythology and the supernatural; travel writing; and garden culture.

His books include Inscribed Landscapes: Travel Writing from Imperial China, A Chinese Bestiary: Strange Creatures from the Guideways Through Mountains and Seas,  and Wandering Spirits: Chen Shiyuan’s Encyclopedia of Dreams.  He is currently working on a book about the Kangxi emperor’s poems on the thirty-six views of the imperial estate, Bishu shanzhuang.
